https://cjssp.uni-corvinus.hu/index.php/cjssp/article/view/834

At the turn of the twenty-first century, social policies became one of the fundamental instruments on which the current capital accumulation regime is based, given their massive nature and global character. So-called conditional cash transfer programs (CCTs) were a milestone in this direction. The objective of this article is to study the consumption practices – the what and how – that CCTs impose on their recipients and the latter’s relationship with credit in Buenos Aires City. The qualitative methodology is based on documentary analysis and semistructured interviews with CCT recipients and public servants. The implications for social policies can be summarised as: (a) re thinking the links between the market and the State, as these regulations involve politics of the body/emotions; and (b) deepening the connections between social policies (in the form of CCTs), consumption, and credit.
Florencia Chahbenderian

https://cjssp.uni-corvinus.hu/index.php/cjssp/article/view/818

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted that access to financial capital is a significant challenge for operators of informal income activities, exposing financial inequality. However, there is a need to understand why operators are not disposed to access loans even when offered. Drawing on qualitative research in Soweto, South Africa, beneficiaries of cash transfers who also engage in various income-generating activities were found to be sceptical of loans, even when the receipt of transfers in cash would allow them to borrow. This paper contributes to the debate about strengthening participation in the informal economy as a mechanism for dealing with poverty, unemployment, and inequality.
Chibuikem Charles Nnaeme

https://cjssp.uni-corvinus.hu/index.php/cjssp/article/view/841

Higher education degrees from European Union countries are automatically recognised in other Member States. However, legal recognition does not necessarily translate into symbolic recognition in the profession. This dynamic can be observed in the field of medicine in Germany, where German graduates often face symbolic devaluation when they graduate in certain other countries and return to work in Germany. At the same time, the group of foreign medical students is socially exclusive, and admission to a medical programme in Germany is difficult and unsuccessful for many applicants. Based on the theory of symbolic power and capital and a centre–periphery perspective, this paper reconstructs the means and ways by which privileged students from the centre, Germany, seek social reproduction by studying medicine abroad in the semi-periphery, Hungary, Latvia and Romania. The results show that moving to the semi-periphery is only chosen when other alternatives in the centre are not feasible. Certain symbolic disadvantages of studying abroad were identified, and countermeasures were developed to ensure symbolic legitimacy upon return. The results also show that the semi-periphery is not homogeneous in its symbolic ambivalence from a centre–periphery perspective.
Gregor Schäfer

https://cjssp.uni-corvinus.hu/index.php/cjssp/article/view/813

As the number of foreigners residing in South Korea has increased, the overall scale of crimes committed by non-Korean nationals and the associated public anxiety have both risen. This paper seeks to explore the trends in violent crimes committed by foreigners in Korea by examining crime statistics from the Korean National Police Agency and immigration data from the Korean Ministry of Justice. Additionally, this paper empirically examines the attributes of the home countries of foreign criminals who are arrested in Korea. The results of our analysis, based on the violent crime statistics for foreign nationals of twelve types from 2003 to 2019, reveal that foreigners from higher-income countries with better educational environments are more likely to be involved in violent criminal activities. Individuals from countries with relatively strong law enforcement are less likely to engage in violent crime while residing in South Korea.
Soojung KimWoosik Yu

https://cjssp.uni-corvinus.hu/index.php/cjssp/article/view/794

The present paper aims to reveal the main problems that the long-term care system in Spain faced during COVID-19, outline its main challenges, and reflect on how the response to the pandemic has been tackled to provide a basis, in terms of prevention, for future similar scenarios. For this purpose, two scoping reviews were conducted. The first identified the main socio cultural characteristics of the care system in Spain, described the multi-level model regarding the institutional architectures, and exposed the consequences of the development of the Dependence Act and the impact of the 2008 crisis. The second established the main emergent topics in scientific production regarding long-term care and older people that have emerged due to COVID-19. The contrast in the results shows the structural deficiencies of the long-term care system and the need for profound changes, such as the restructuring of the retirement home system to adapt it to pandemic scenarios and the prioritization of the path of deinstitutionalization, as long as this is carried out with the reinforcement of social assistance mechanisms and appropriate community assistance resources.
Luis López-Lago OrtizBeatriz Muñoz GonzálezBorja Rivero JiménezDavid Conde CaballeroLorenzo Mariano Juárez

https://cjssp.uni-corvinus.hu/index.php/cjssp/article/view/814

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of local government spending and institutional quality on the inclusive economy in Indonesia. To avoid the problems of endogeneity and omitted variable bias, the method used in this study is the system generalized method of moments (GMM). It was found that local government spending on housing and social functions positively and significantly affected the Inclusive Economic Development Index (IEDI). In contrast, government spending on health had a significant negative effect. Spending on education had an insignificant negative effect, while investment had a positive and significant effect on IEDI. The corruption rate as a proxy for the quality of institutional processes had a significant adverse impact on IEDI. This study provides an overview of the role and influence of local government policies and institutional quality that affect the region’s development and inclusive economic growth.
Baiq Yeyen MardiyaniBudiono BudionoAchmad Kemal Hidayat

https://cjssp.uni-corvinus.hu/index.php/cjssp/article/view/829

The aim of this study is to examine factors associated with COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy. An online survey was conducted to collect the data to be evaluated. The survey included demographic questions and four scales: vaccine hesitancy, fear of COVID-19, stress, and vaccine conspiracy beliefs. Four hundred and ninety-six people answered the survey in Turkey. A conceptual model was established and estimated with a structural equation model to explore the relationships. The findings identified a statistically significant direct effect on vaccine hesitancy of conspiracy beliefs, fear, and stress. Accordingly, it was concluded that individuals with a firm belief in vaccine conspiracies, high stress levels, and low fear of COVID-19 had high levels of vaccine hesitancy. This article suggests the importance of public access to accurate information and low stress levels.
Mine Aydemir-DevOnur BarcaNuran Bayram-ArlıVeysel Bozkurt

https://cjssp.uni-corvinus.hu/index.php/cjssp/article/view/773

The religiosity of people may make them respond positively or negatively to various persons in different social situations. Some scholars claim that religiosity can be positively related to intimate partner violence (IPV), when the dominance of men over women is sanctioned by religion. On the other hand, some other scholars support the view that religiousness is negatively associated with IPV as individuals involved in religious activities tend to be less aggressive and more altruistic and empathetic to their partners. This paper attempts to reveal how the religiosity of husbands and wives may mitigate the former’s violent behaviour against the latter in Tamil Nadu State, India. The findings presented in the paper are arrived at from the analysis of qualitative data collected through selected case studies.

Karunanithi GopalakrishnanManoharan Murugesan

https://cjssp.uni-corvinus.hu/index.php/cjssp/article/view/929
The review presents OECD’s A Broken Social Elevator? How to Promote Social Mobility volume. Its primary aim is to identify the mechanisms that hinder social mobility, focusing in particular on inter-generational mobility and the lack of it. The mechanisms are presented in three groups – property, health, and education – which are not only mechanisms of mobility but also indicators of it. The three groups can, of course, be broken down purely analytically, but in reality, they are closely intertwined and mutually reinforcing. In addition to this, albeit with less emphasis, I also present the chapter on intra-generational mobility. I also discuss the possible consequences of low social mobility and make some critiques, first and foremost concerning the sometimes somewhat over-generalized conclusions of the book.Ábel Csathó

https://cjssp.uni-corvinus.hu/index.php/cjssp/article/view/931

The ISSP organized its second user conference in December 2023 on the 2020 Environmental module. The ISSP environmental module deals with generic environmental attitudes and preferences for environmental protection. The Environment module of ISSP has been fielded in 2020 for the fourth time; earlier surveys were carried out in 1993, 2000, and 2010. The number of nations has expanded considerably over time, from 19 countries in 1993 to 39 in 2010. The Environment module of ISSP covers all three elements of environmental attitudes: evaluative, cognitive, and behavioral aspects.
Bálint Dániel Kalotai
